Social and Political Messages #2

Last Name lyrics
Songwriters: Underwood, Carrie; Laird, Luke; Lindsey, Hillary;
Last night I got served a little bit too much of that poison, baby
Last night I did things I'm not proud of and I got a little crazy
Last night I met a guy on the dance floor and I let him call me baby

And I don't even know his last name
My momma would be so ashamed
It started off, "Hey cutie, where are you from?"
And then it turned into, "Oh no, what have I done?"
And I don't even know his last name

And he left the club about around 3 o'clock in the mornin?
His Pinto is sittin? there in the parkin? lot when it should?ve been a warnin?
And I had no clue what I was gettin? into so I blame it on the Cuervo
Oh, where did my manners go?

And I don't even know his last name
My momma would be so ashamed
It started off, "Hey cutie, where are you from?"
And then it turned into, "Oh no, what have I done?"
And I don't even know his last name, here we go!

Today I woke up thinkin' ?bout Elvis somewhere in Vegas, I'm not sure
How I got here or how this ring on my left hand just appeared
Outta nowhere, I gotta go, I take the chips and the Pinto and hit the road
They say what happens here stays here, all of this'll disappear
It's just one little problem

I don't even know my last name
My momma would be so ashamed
It started off, "Hey cutie, where are you from?"
And then it turned into, "Oh no, what have I done?"
And I don't even know my last name

What have I done? What have I done? What have I done?
Oh, what have I done? I don't even know my last name
When it turned into, "Oh no, what have I done?"
And I don't even know my last name

It started off, "Hey cutie, where are you from?"
And then it turned into, "Oh no, what have I done?"
And I don't even know my last name, oh yeah

Analysis:

“Last Name” by Carrie Underwood has a social message about people’s actions. It talks about a woman who went to a bar in Vegas and she gets drunk. Once she wakes up in the morning, she finds, “this ring on my left hand” and finds out that when she was drunk at the bar she hooked up with a guy and she does not “even know (her) last name”. This message is about all of the people in our world that find themselves in these situations. People everywhere find themselves getting wasted and not remembering what events occurred the past day. This ever so popular method of spending evenings around our country is becoming out of control and if we all start to partake of this behavior, we ourselves might just find ourselves if not married, in some other predicament such as jail or even injured.
By producing this song, Carrie Underwood was social message of lost love as well. It is funny how, in our society today, there is little similarities to what love used to be 100 years ago. People are getting married and divorced at an astounding rate as well as getting drunk or carried away in places such as Vegas and tying the knot a bit too soon. If love was to be slowed down and not just all passion and in the moment, things would be longer lasting. (Not saying that that stuff is not good now and then!) These social messages are found throughout the song “Last Name” by Carrie Underwood.
